2018 Honoree

This year we are delighted to honor Mary “Maysie” Starr at the 2018 Moonlight & Roses gala. Maysie grew up on Summit Street in Chestnut Hill and has been visiting the Arboretum ever since. She has fond memories of her father taking her to the Log Cabin, and in turn, she brought her children, and then grandchildren, to the same spot. Maysie earned a diploma from the Springside School, now Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, and attended the Institute de Touraine in Tours, France, and Vanderbilt University. Maysie is an avid gardener, birder, a well-known civic leader, and advocate of environmental organizations.

As a member of the Directors’ Guild and as a longtime generous supporter of the Arboretum’s programs and initiatives, Maysie is an outspoken advocate for the Arboretum and its mission. Her leadership gifts to Out on a Limb and to the establishment of the Horticulture Center, helped to strengthen the Arboretum’s ability to extend to our community important messages concerning conservation and protection of the natural world. She is deeply interested in stewardship of the Arboretum’s woodlands, wetlands, and meadows which provide habitat for birds and other wildlife. Today families are enjoying their Arboretum visits, learning to value nature, trees, and all plant life while creating their own family memories.

Maysie is a true life-long champion of the Morris Arboretum, and we are deeply honored to have this opportunity to pay special tribute to her during the 2018 Moonlight & Roses gala.

Event Co-chairs

Co-chairing the 2018 Moonlight & Roses Planning Committee are Amanda Cobb and Sarah Salmon. Both grew up close to the Arboretum and are graduates of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and Trinity College. After a stint in New York, Amanda now lives in Lower Gwynedd with her husband, Andy, and two young sons, Charlie and Win. She is a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Fox & Roach in Chestnut Hill. Amanda is passionate about the Arboretum's mission to be a center for education and outreach in the community. Recently returning from London, Sarah lives in Chestnut Hill with her husband, Morgan, and three young children, Isabel, Field, and William. Sarah loves being able to share her favorite Arboretum hideouts with her family and take advantage of the programming for children and adults.

How the event helps the Arboretum

Moonlight & Roses is the Morris Arboretum’s annual fundraising gala that raises money for the arboretum’s annual operations. Funds raised through this year’s event will support all aspects of Morris Arboretum and will ensure continued excellence in direct support of our mission.

History of Moonlight & Roses

As a longstanding Arboretum tradition, the Moonlight & Roses gala, which always takes place in early June, is unsurpassed.

The lively garden party we now know as Moonlight & Roses has had a colorful evolution. In the early 1970s, it was dubbed the Spring Fling, and was held on the lawn behind Gates Hall. The late Jane O’Neill was instrumental in the success of the gala in those early days.

In the 1980s, patrons and contributors donned their garden party attire for the event that was rechristened Moonlight & Roses . The evening traditionally begins with cocktails served in the Rose Garden, while dinner, served by a professional catering staff, is held in a festive tent atop the hill near the Widener Visitor Center. Music and dancing round out the evening of friendly conversation and gourmet dining.

Moonlight & Roses has always provided an intimate setting unique to Philadelphia charity events, and is enjoyed by a capacity crowd each year. The Morris Arboretum's annual fundraising gala, Moonlight & Roses , has become a tradition among friends, families, and colleagues in the Delaware Valley.
